What 10 million People Do to Calm their Amygdala

Updated: Jun 15, 2022

The answer is : Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)

What exactly is EFT?

Emotional freedom technique (EFT) is also known as Tapping. At least 10 million (and counting) people worldwide have used tapping in the past. It's based on 2 principles: ancient Chinese acupressure and modern psychology.

According to the Tapping Solution Foundation, research shows that tapping:

  1. Calms the amygdala in the brain

  2. Regulates our nervous system

  3. Reduces stress and anxiety

(isn’t that awesome?!)

How do you do it?

The practice consists of tapping with your fingertips on specific meridian points while talking through your issue. The same basic energy meridian points in the body are used to eliminate physical, emotional and mental issues - for example, relieving stress.

Tapping focusing on an issue. For example: headache, menstrual cramps, anger, or fear. You focus on this issue while using your fingertips to tap 7-10 times on specific meridian points on the body. (see below).

Tapping on these points, while focusing on the issue sends a signal to the brain to calm down. When this happens, your body and mind starts to feel relaxed and in control.

There are many common problems that people use EFT for. They include: anxiety, depression, fear, insomnia, anger and headaches (plus many more!).

There are many advantages of tapping, the #1 being that ANYONE can do it, adults and children, and do it by themselves (no practitioner needed). Also, it’s noninvasive and there’s no special equipment needed to perform (meaning it’s FREE).

Another great feature of EFT is that you can adapt it to any situation. For example, it would work in a situation where you’re fearful AND just as well when you have a headache.

Below is a step-by-step example on how to complete the practice.

Steps of EFT

Step 1: RATE PROBLEM

  • Rate yourself on a scale of 1-10 on the severity of your feelings around the problem (anxiety, headache, anger)

Step 2 : SET UP

  • Each time you tap a point, tap it 7-10 times focusing on the negative/problem (don’t be worried if you lose track)

  • Say the phrase: Even though I have this problem ____, I deeply & completely, love & accept myself.

  • Repeat the problem, “this anxiety, this anxiety, this anxiety”

  • Rate again 1-10 ; if not going down, or close to 0, do sequence again

Step 3 : POSITIVE

  • Each time you tap a point, tap it 7-10 times, each time with POSITIVE

  • Even though I have this problem ____, I choose to feel _____ and I deeply & completely, love & accept myself.

    • I choose to feel serene.

    • I choose to feel confident and strong.

    • I choose to feel empowered.

Let me know your experience with tapping! Have you heard of it before? Have you utilized it in the past? Do you know anyone who could benefit from it? I’d love to hear from you! :)
